Science is about the whole world around us: from the tiniest particles to the largest galaxies; from the most delicate leaf to the most complicated animals. Students at Plympton Academy are on a journey through the wonders of Science, taking in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in Years 7, 8 and 9, then specialising in Triple Science or Core and Additional Science in Years 10 and 11. At Post-16 students can study any of the main Science disciplines, or follow a combined Applied Science course.

Science at Plympton Academy is taught in a fun and engaging way. At Plympton Academy we are lucky to have well equipped laboratories making practical work at the core of any course.

The Science Faculty arranges a number of enrichment activities throughout the year including:

  • Summer trip to the Big band fair south west
  • Year 7 and 8 Science Fair
  • Trip to Langage power station
  • Ecological surveys at Wembury
  • Conservation Zoo trip for A level students
  • External speakers from higher education establishments
  • Hands on wildlife experiences in School
  • Biology Olympiad competition
  • Chemistry Olympiad competition

Year 7

During Year 7, students will study a range of biological, chemical and physical concepts ranging from the types of particles and how they behave to the structure of cells and how they reproduce and the applications of forces and how they affect objects in deep space.

Year 8

During Year 8, students will again study the full breadth of the three science disciplines, but this time delving deeper into the implications of science today and for the future. They will debate the ethics of genetic engineering

Annual Y7/8 Science Fair

Each year all Key Stage 3 students complete an individual science fair project to be presented during British Science Week. This is an exciting event that allows students to complete a practical based project in an area of science that interests them. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to use their investigation skills to find the answer to a question of their choosing. The types of project that have been presented in the past include:

  • The effect of sugar on tooth decay
  • Where are all the stars going?
  • The Physics of skateboarding
  • The Bouba Kiki Effect
  • The effect of temperature growth on crystals
  • The effect of different types of soil on plant growth and health
  • The winners of the science fair get the opportunity to visit the Big Bang South West Science Fair which is held at Exeter University in June.

Extra Curricular Activities

Science is awesome Crest Awards.

Trips and Visits including a trip to the Big bang Science Fair for students that show a flare for science.

Year 9/10/11

For study from year 9 onwards, from September 2015, students will either follow the Triple Science route, where they will study 3 separate GCSEs in science or Combined Science, where students will study two general science GCSE’s, all content will be assessed at the end of year 11.

For students currently in year 9, 10 and 11 (as of Summer 2014) they will be following the Core and additional route (Unless they opted for Triple science). This involves three exams for each GCSE in each of the science disciplines, a piece of ISA coursework worth 25% which comprises a practical activity and two exams. Core Science is taught in year 10 and examined in year 10 for students who are ready. Additional Science is taught in year 11 and examined in the summer of year 11.

For Triple Science you will study 3 separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and will have 3 different specialist teachers. You take 3 exams per subject at the end of year 11.

For Combined Science, again you study the 3 subjects separately and have 3 separate teachers. Combined science gives students the opportunity to explore areas a number of areas of science in good depth, gaining practical skills along the way.

If you enjoy science and have a science target of C or above, we recommend you choose Triple Science.

However, the Combined Science will not stop you from future studies in Science at A level, and many students still gain pleasing grades in Biology, Chemistry and Physics A-level, having followed the Combined Science route.

We are currently following the AQA exam board for both courses. This is a very popular syllabus throughout England and there are many online resources to help support revision for this course that the students can use at home. All students are provided with a revision guide free of charge to help them along with their studies.


The new courses (from September 2015) are examined at the end of the course (year 11). Practicals are undertaken throughout the course, however, the practical element of both courses are no longer examined (what was previously known as an ISA). Instead, questions relating to practicals undertaken during lessons may appear on the exam papers.

Students who started their GCSE in Science before September 2015 will still have to undertake an exam relating to a practical, called an ISA, worth 25% of their final GCSE grade. Those currently studying Core Science may also have the option to take their GCSE in Science in year 10, if they are doing well (in relation to their target grade
