Plympton Academy


The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is additional funding provided by the Department for Education (DfE) to enhance the education of our most socio-economically deprived students, with the intent of closing the attainment gap of students who are vulnerable to possible underachievement.

The allocation of funding is based upon the number of students entitled to free school meals within the last six years (known as Ever 6 FSM) and children in care (known as LAC) that attend the school in Years 7-11.  There is also additional Pupil Premium funding (known as the Service Premium) for any student who has or has had within the last four years a parent in the armed forces (known as Ever 4 Service). All schools are required to report on the amount of funding received and how this is being used annually.


Funding and use of Pupil Premium

At Plympton Academy we have identified a number of barriers to learning of our disadvantaged students (those who are Ever 6 FSM and LAC) and Ever 4 Service students.  Under the DfE’s guidance, academies and school are able to pool the funding together to maximise the impact and enhance the attainment of disadvantaged students. There is no expectation that schools should spend the grant only on eligible pupils.

The most common barriers to learning we have identified for our disadvantaged students which are being addressed through our Action Plan are:

  1. Literacy and numeracy skills – identified from Key stage 2 data results have historically made less progress nationally over Key Stage 3 and 4 than other students

  2. Aspiration and educational ambition – Pupil Premium students arrive at Plympton Academy with low educational ambition and aspirations

  3. Behaviour - this can have a detrimental impact on academic progress where behaviours does not meet our high expectations

  4. Attendance – nationally attendance rates for pupil premium students are lower than that of other peers

  5. Reduced home-school engagement

In order to ensure our funding is maximised we review the spending each year and use the latest case studies from schools with similar contexts, research and evidence from an array of sources including the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) and the Sutton Trust to ensure the greatest positive impact for our disadvantaged students. The EEF recognises that the idea that the attainment gap “can be solved simply by spending more is beguiling but unrealistic….Good teaching is the most important lever schools have to improve outcomes for disadvantaged students”.
