Health and Social Care Intent 

 

Our curriculum is designed to create compassionate individuals who aspire to contribute to public health and support vulnerable groups within our society.

 

Students will be able to:

 

Understand and empathise with others who are experiencing difficulties with their physical health and mental wellbeing

Therefore, the curriculum will:

  • Provide opportunities to learn the skills needed to monitor physiological and psychological health
  • Provide the knowledge to allow the students to develop empathy and compassion towards others with health conditions
  • Encourage students to make difficult decisions in care situations with the knowledge of value systems and ethical theories

 

Become independent and resilient to challenges in and outside of the school setting

Therefore, the curriculum will:

  • Challenge students to achieve the highest success possible
  • Allow students to be organised, reflective and respondent to assessment criteria
  • Provide opportunities to verbally share their thoughts and emotions with regard to societal dilemmas

 

Create a desire to make a difference with their knowledge, understanding and universal language in the health and social care sector

Therefore, the curriculum will:

  • Be knowledge-rich with the criteria for qualifying professionals
  • Demonstrate the need and success of different professionals required within our society
  • Provide them with a nurturing environment where academic and personal growth is embedded through every interaction
  • Create students who are equipped to venture into further education, fulfilling their aspirations of working in the Health and Social Care sector

How does the course work?

Our course at Plympton Academy is made up of three components: two coursework units and one controlled assessment.

Our three-block structure, explore, develop and apply, has been developed to allow students to build on and embed their knowledge.

This allows them to grow in confidence and then put into practice what they have learned.

What does this qualification cover at Plympton Academy?

Plympton Academy has incorporates topics relevant across the health and social care sector:

  • Human Lifespan Development
  • Working in Health and Social Care
  • Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

The option content of this qualification has been selected to incorporate understanding from the three mandatory units:

  • Physiological Disorders and their Care

 

Additional Diploma units

  • Promoting Public Health
  • Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care
  • Nutritional Health

 

What could this qualification lead to?

In recent years at Plympton Academy students have generally taken this course alongside other qualifications as part of a 2–year programme at Post-16. This will enable learners to progress to a degree programme chosen from a range of programmes in the health and social care sector.

The qualification is intended to carry UCAS points and is recognised by higher education institutions as contributing to meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses. It can be taken alongside, for example:

• A Levels in Biology and Psychology, which could lead to a BSc (Hons) in Nursing

• A Levels in English and History, which could lead to a BA (Hons) in Primary Education

• a BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport, which could lead to a Foundation Degree in

Sports Studies and Development.

Learners should always check the entry requirements for degree programmes with specific higher education providers.
