Plympton Academy was proud to recently welcome the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO) for an unforgettable day of live performance and musical mentoring as part of the orchestra’s summer tour across the South West.
As a recognised Lead School for Music in Devon and proud member of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust, Plympton Academy was specially selected by Devon Music Education Hub to take part in the NYO Inspire programme, a national initiative that broadens access to orchestral music and nurtures the next generation of classical musicians.
The visit offered students a rare opportunity to connect with world-class young performers. Throughout the day, NYO musicians, aged 13 to 18, brought energy, passion, and a sense of possibility to the school, highlighting that excellence in music is not only attainable; it can be relatable.
Students were immersed in an inclusive and joyful musical experience, as the sounds of classical masterpieces like Rimsky-Korsakov blended with iconic film scores such as Star Wars, resonated through classrooms, corridors, and shared spaces.
The day demonstrated the power of cultural and creative opportunities to raise aspirations, unlock potential, and nurture excellence in the performing arts. It also underlined the Academy’s commitment to inclusive, high-quality music education with plans underway to expand classical instrument provision for students of all abilities and backgrounds.
Three of Plympton Academy’s students caught the attention of NYO staff as potential candidates for the prestigious NYO Inspire programme; a pathway that could one day lead them to perform on stages such as the Royal Albert Hall. With only two students currently involved in the programme across all of Devon, this recognition marks a significant achievement.
Reflecting on the experience, a Year 9 student said:
“Before today, I didn’t think classical music was really for people like me. But seeing musicians our age, playing with so much energy and confidence has changed how I think. Now I want to try out for the school orchestra. I can see myself doing this in the future.”
Nicky Clapson, Head of Music at Plympton Academy, commented:
“Hosting the NYO was not just about music. It was about aspiration, access, and belonging. Our students saw what is possible. They did not just hear classical music, they felt included in it. They collaborated, created, and celebrated. That experience will stay with them long after the instruments are packed away.”
Shaun Willis, Headteacher at Plympton Academy commented:
"This visit perfectly reflects the heart of Plympton Academy. Our values: curiosity, community, courage, and compassion aren’t just words; they are what we see every day in our students. Today, the National Youth Orchestra inspired our young people to be curious about music, to come together as a community, to have the courage to believe in their potential, and to support one another with kindness. It’s moments like these that remind us how powerful the arts are in shaping confident, creative young people."
