Our students go the distance in powerful charity walk

Community spirit and determination took centre stage recently at Plympton Academy as our students completed a sponsored walk in aid of a local charity

They took part in the challenge as part of their House Sponsored Adventure, which saw them walk from the school to Saltram House and back to support Jeremiah's Journey, a charity which supports children and families who face bereavement, providing guidance as they navigate the challenging journey of grief.

Our students showed resilience by working in teams to complete the walk in very warm conditions, supporting each other throughout the day.

Members of the local community supported them along the way, including passers-by who wanted to stop and chat to them about why they were taking on the challenge, and the importance of supporting a local cause.

Mr S. Willis, Headteacher at Plympton Academy, expressed his personal pride for our student community, recognising how they ‘perfectly embodied the school’s values’.

“This was such a fantastic day which saw so many of our young people come together in aid of a remarkable charity who do such important work. Our four values of Community, Compassion, Courage and Curiosity were in abundance for everyone to see and I feel privileged to lead a school which cares so passionately about them.

“The students will take so much from this experience. An understanding of why it’s important to support local causes and how their actions and voices can be so powerful in doing good work”.

Our school, part of Thinking Schools Academy Trust; are committed to helping young people find their voice and become active citizens in their communities and the wider world. Providing these opportunities helps Transform Life Chances so students build a sense of social responsibility.

Mr J. Davenport, Regional Director for Thinking Schools Academy Trust in the South West, recognised how Plympton Academy are a ‘shining example’ of student voice and community engagement.

“We’re proud to see students at Plympton Academy leading with such purpose, and empathy for a cause which supports so many local families in our community.

“At Thinking Schools Academy Trust, we’re passionate about helping young people become active citizens, so as individuals they understand the world around them and can use their voice to improve it”.
